HELENSWOOD School in Hastings stormed to victory in their first handball tournament, beating eight London-based teams in a Year Eight and Nine inter-Borough Competition staged recently at the Newham Leisure Centre in London.
After some highly competitive early matches which showed a good level of skill in all teams, the stage was set for a final between Helenswood and Barking Abbey School, from Barking and Dagenham.
It looked like the London side were going to take victory as they led two-nil with just four minutes remaining.
But Helenswood (pictured) battled back in style with three late goals to clinch victory and spark celebrations.
London Handball Development Officer Ari Bekker said afterwards: “The standard of handball was very high in the event, and it was great to see girls enjoying themselves - even some who didn’t have much experience.”
A similar tournament for boys was staged last weekend, and we hope to have a report in Handball News shortly.
