English Champs Host European Teams

WHILE several British teams travelled to Sweden for the Partille Cup, two top club teams from Europe were making their way to England to take part in a three-team tournament with English champions, Great Dane.

The visitors were Germany team Turnverein 1869 e.V. Heiligenhaus (otherwise known as TVH 1869), and cs Meaux Handball from France.

The towns of Heiligenhaus and Meaux are twinned with Basildon, in Essex, where sporting and cultural visits have been organised for many years. This year Basildon were the hosts as football teams from the towns competed in a tournament at the annual BASFEST.

The handballers of the European towns were intrigued and delighted to learn the English national league champions were based close by and matches were organised at Leyton SCORE Centre in London.

Great Dane edging a close fought game against Meaux, winning 20-14. And after a short break the French again suffered a second defeat at the hands of TVH 1869, losing 18-20.

In final match (boosted by the result of their national footballers), the Germans drew 18-18 with Great Dane in a highly competitive game.

Afterwards, Basildon presented Friendship pennants to the teams and all the players adjourned to the nearest pub to continue the competition!
